Crazy, Long, Torturous Week

September 16, 2017

Hey Everyone,

I cannot believe it is the middle of September, I swear it was January yesterday. But alas, that is not the case, much to my chagrin. Today we are celebrating my oldest boys birthday, so we’ve had a turbulent week and it just got totally thrown sideways. As a relatively OCD person that likes to plan in advance, if I hadn’t had an idea of what was going to possibly ensue, I would have probably had a nervous breakdown. Let’s see what this week brought to the Dopey Challenge Adventure.

09/10- Sunday- Learned from a friend how to do an oil change, after buying the wrong size filter for my car. Who knew there were three different sizes? And then randomly having a game night at their house, where the kids made the biggest popcorn mess in the living room. A vacuum got clogged and then getting stuck with sweeping the entire mess. Kids are since banned from eating popcorn- ever.

09-11- Monday- Worrying constantly about the MRI/MRA for my oldest child the next day and getting him to eat lots of food because he wouldn’t be able to eat until Tuesday afternoon. Also, getting a message from my oldest child’s teacher that I didn’t put enough money in the field trip envelope for both of us to go, so I need to figure out how I’m going to 1)get the money, 2)get it to her on time to still be a chaperone.

09/12- Tuesday- Oldest child having the MRI/MRA and then ending up urinating on himself, and also waking up during the middle of the scans.

09/13-Wednesday- Coordinating with all the guests for the party on Sunday if they are coming and what they are bringing food wise. I never knew how many people don’t answer their phones or don’t look far enough in their schedule to know a week in advance if they can go to an event they were notified about a month ago. It’s done and over with, my son will have a nice birthday party no matter what.

Husband and MIL organizing a pizza dinner and movie for everyone at her house.

My oldest son losing his 2nd tooth right before needing to go to bed, and then figuring out how to come up with money to pay him as the tooth fairy. Last time we got a $5 movie that had been on his wish list. Husband and I only gave him a $1 this time.

09/14- Thursday- It’s my oldest boys 6th birthday!! Oh, how time flies, I remember when he was born. *Cue tears* Super excitement, and craziness ensued that morning with both boys. That afternoon I ordered a cupcake-cake from Wal-Mart. It is where the cupcakes are placed close together and the frosting is smoothed out over all of them as if they were a cake. I would have made it myself, but I’m not the good. The person who was taking the order seemed to have a hearing problem and couldn’t figure out the difference between G, V, and B, and even asked me if I was placing a serious order. Um. . . .yeah, I just totally wasted 45 minutes of my time waiting for you to get on the phone, get your book in front of you, and told you my order for it to be a total fake order because my child’s name isn’t traditional and I called 3 days in advance instead of the night before? Totes fake.

After trying to order a 6ft sandwich for the party from Wal-Mart and being told it would be $150, I’m like, “See ya” and just ordered from Port of Subs ended up being $45, and I got three different types of sandwiches out of the 6ft platter.

09/15- Friday- A pipe burst at the apartment complex so the water got shut off for about 6 hours. So instead of doing dishes on my lunch break, I had to smell nasty dishes for the whole hot day. ***Warning***If you are not mature enough to read about a normal biological activity such as pooping, please skip the ** content. Thank you for your maturity. **And my youngest child wasn’t feeling well after coming home from the daycare and ended up pooping himself, it was an accident because we are allergic to cranberries (in any format) and when we (myself and my boys) consume them we get major diarrhea and vomit. I got a text from the daycare letting me know they had served them on accident and wanted to let me know so we could be prepared but the text came after he had already pooped his underwear.  My youngest knows he shouldn’t be having accidents in his underwear and when it happened he tried to clean it up with toilet paper, but ended up making a mess everywhere in the bathroom. With no running water, it was a horrible experience for everyone.**

My oldest came home from school crying and confused because his substitute teacher wouldn’t allow him to eat the packed lunch for him, telling him that he had to eat the school’s lunch. The school we are designated for 98% of the students qualify for free/reduced lunch, not us because we make $50 too much, so we pack lunches for him. Another text to the teacher to find out what the hell is going on, and I feel bad for her because she had been at a funeral.

09/16- Saturday- Had planned to do my Long run of 12.5 miles on this day because I knew that today was going to be busy with the birthday party before, during and after, Husband decided that he was going to get up early and go to the college and start working on a long and complex paper, so I didn’t get it done.

This is what life brings. Chaos. Love. Fudged up plans. If I hadn’t looked ahead and seen that this last week was going to be jumbled, I would have been super upset, stressed, and probably would have just said, “F this” and just given up. Instead of stressing, too much, I kept going and knew that this is just another hill in the adventure. Albeit, there was a night where I just texted a friend about how life sucks and then got over it the next morning.

As a part of this journey, this is the kind of kink that life will throw at you. Don’t give up. Not on yourself, or your plan, or this adventure. Just keep going. We cannot go anywhere successfully if we give up at every little bump in the road. Instead of just throwing your whole training plan out the window because a week didn’t go as planned, just pick up as if the hick-up had never occurred. Be strong and resilient. I believe in you! This is only 1 week out of 52 in a year, there are 51 other fantastic weeks that will make up for it.

See you on the other side!

August Training Calendar

I am not the most technologically savvy person in the world, as long as the device turns on and off I will use it, but if it is broken, I am calling my husband, tech support, or anyone else to fix it. I used a combination of the Jeff Galloways Dopey Challenge Training schedule, a little bit of life thrown in, and some intentional scheduling.

Sunday’s are my long runs, with a “super long run” every other Sunday. As you can see 08/06 and 08/20. I usually go to the treadmill, but on this day I hit the road, just like Amelia Bedilia.

Tuesday’s are interval workouts/fartlek.

Thursday’s are hills.

Friday’s are run/walk with speed as focus.

This might sound very boring but I am a dread mill person. It is super sad to say that I really like running on the treadmill. Because otherwise I am slow and steady the entire way, for some strange reason if I’m running on the street my pace is about 9:30-9:45 min/mile (in the beginning it was 10:15-10:30 so I HAVE gotten a little faster) pretty much the entire time. Using the treadmill seems to force me to run faster. Plus, I’m 4’9″ so I’m short as hell, I do not expect myself to have a very long stride, or go very fast.

As a side note, because my husband is a full time student and needs to either do homework, study, or decompress from being around people (super introverted), to give him that much needed time I take the boys to swim lessons on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. While the boys are swimming I’m doing my workout. We get there between 5:00-5:15 and the kids go to the free Kids Gym where the kids do kid stuff and then when it’s time for swimming from 6:30-7:00 the kids get walked over to their lessons.

Recently my gym added a group class called, Body Combat, that happens on Thursday nights so I might join that class (then Friday would be changed to a hill day).  Body Combat seems to be a whole body workout with some fantastic cross training. What do you think? Have you tried or heard of Body Combat? I would love to hear from you on what your experience is with the program. Or what you think about my training schedule so far.

See you on the other side!

Managing the Time

Hey Everyone,

Life is complicated, ever-changing, and just plain busy. Having a full 40 hour work week with ample opportunities for over time (OT) all year-long, a husband in school full-time with a schedule that changes every semester (or two times during the summer months with summer school) and group study sessions, and two young children; life is an unstable mess at any given time. To help keep the sanity and stay somewhat organized during this journey, and not miss an exercise appointment I am going to be using two main sources.

  1. Cozi Image result for cozi

This is such a great site. I cannot talk about all the different resources available enough. Just for FREE!! You got it. FREE. It is the best four letter word that I can use. Not only does it sync across multiple devices, but it can have up to 14 people/pets on one calendar.

Here are some of the additional things that it includes:

Image result for cozi color coding*Color coding- associate a color for a person, or a color for an entire family event so that when you see that color you know it’s for little Johnny.

*meal planning- breakfast, lunch, and snacks are the categories and you can set when you are having those meals. A slight drawback though is that the meals are automatically put to the household color. With that aside, all the family members would need to do is log into the site from a computer device and know what is for dinner on that night.

*recipes- if you are going to be meal planning, it helps if you can have the recipe information at your finger tips. When you make a recipe it asks you where you found the recipe. Being able to copy and paste the link into the recipe slot saves a lot of time and energy searching through Pinterest, or old cookbooks. Speaking of, you can even put in old recipes, it will take a little longer than copy and paste; if it’s important you can do it.

*customizable lists- you can make as many lists as you want: chores, grocery, market, even housecleaning. If you are in the process of meal planning and you want to add the ingredients you have the option of adding to “Lists” then decide which list in particular. Easy as a couple clicks.

*printing options- if you are the type of person that needs it to be right in front of you in a paper format but have such “chicken scratch” that no one but you can read it, then you can still use Cozi and just print out the different pages you want to see. No matter if it is Weekly/Monthly view, grocery list, chores, menu, or even just one person’s schedule.

These are some of the best features that I have found with using Cozi. I understand that it isn’t for everyone. I could use Google calendar, and outlook calendar, but those are just so boring to me and take up too much of my time to color code, or to meal plan. If those work for you, great keep using. Nothing against them, they are just not for me.

2. Personal calendar

Image result for Creative Year Family Spiral Planner By RecollectionsAnother great resource that I use is this great big monstrosity from Michaels. An 18-month calendar that was $29.99, but because I went and bought it when Michaels was doing a 40% off sale, it was only $17+ tax. That is a steal in my opinion for how long I’m keeping it and what information I put in it so paying $1 a month to use is worth it.

Customizable- my husband does not care and does not want to know what I do during my workouts other than when I have my long runs. Also, there’s no need for him to see my blogging schedule, crafting schedule, or what I’m doing with our boys on our Saturday dates. So, I use my big planner to do more detail work that is individualized to me.

Whew! Now that I have overloaded you with all this exorbitant information and resources, just remember, use what works for you and your family. There is no one size fits all approach. These two resources make sure that my family runs a little more smoothly. A constant line of communication between my husband and myself because we are humans and cannot remember everything.

If you haven’t started or aren’t consistently using a family calendar I urge you to start one for this journey. It will be so much more challenging if you don’t start a reliable schedule.

See you on the other side.
