Life throws those curveballs that can either make or break a person. I have to break it to you that unfortunately the Dopey Challenge has been slightly changed. I’m taking a slight detour and postponing the finale until January 2022. You read that correctly; two years later than the original goal.
This decision was not made lightly. With any journey, it is a good thing to make sure that it is feasible for everyone involved. The reason why is mainly financial. It just isn’t going to be financially possible.
2018 is so that Husband can finish College
2019 and 2020 are to pay off debts.
2021 is to save for this journey
2022- Dopey Challenge
With the postponement of this journey, there is more opportunity to save for a grand adventure. Plus, on the good side, the boys will be 8 and 10 so they can do the 5K and possibly the 10K with me (or at least Monster can) and Husband can run the Half Marathon with me.
I have more time to train properly with more running, eating, and sleeping. All three things I absolutely love to do anyway, but I want to make sure I don’t hurt myself. More time to prepare my body for the rigorous stress it’s going to endure.
Another plus is that my niece and her guardians are going to plan on coming with us as well in 2022. In a house full of males it would be nice to have a manicure/massage with another female or two. . . All the possibilities.
Not giving up, just another detour.

I’ve signed up for my first race towards the Dopey Challenge Adventure. I am super excited!! The race itself is in Angwin, CA, a little town in the middle of Napa Valley that happens to hold my College Alma Mater, Pacific Union Collge (PUC). I graduated in 2015. So I did get a slight discount being an alumnus. Included is a link to register for Angwin to Angwish 2017 race, it is not affiliated so I do not make any money on any of the tickets purchased.
The event itself is a half marathon trail run. It is minutes from St. Helena and Calistoga, CA. You get to see beautiful scenes and meet some amazing people along the way. For some reason though, this race is not as commonly known as the others, the only way I knew about it is because I went to PUC. And it’s not on a common enough running site that makes it easy to find.
I have been a lucky enough person to race in 2015 the Angwin to Angwish race that was a 10K. It was one of those races that I wish I had passed out after. I trained for maybe 3 weeks before the race, and then went straight for it, and then I couldn’t walk straight for a whole week because I was not prepared. I still finished in 1 hour 45 minutes.
I really want to make this race an annual event because then I can go visit my old college campus, visit with professors that I really miss, and just enjoy the experience. Maybe even experience some of the sights that my family couldn’t experience the whole 4 years we were there because we were poor college students living on student loans, and less than minimum wage jobs. Maybe even eat at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), but not likely (in 5 years, maybe). Even though we didn’t see too many of the sights while we were there, the best part of being at the college was the atmosphere; the people are genuinely happy and interested in your well being.
This year is going to be completely different because I am training towards the event so I shouldn’t feel like dying after. Will post an update after the race. Would love to see you all there, I believe there are quite a few different races for the different levels, and there is plenty of time to train for a race so sign up and just go for it!!

We’ve been talking a lot about the Dopey Challenge Adventure, and how we are going to get there together. Even though the end goal is the same: Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World in January 2020 our journey there is going to vary widely. It does not matter where you came from, what you’ve done, or even the ways you get to the end. What matters is what you are going to do from here on out to better yourself so that this Adventure is the best it could be for you. Some of the key points that I’m going to cover are as follows:
- Talk to a medical professional to make sure you are healthy enough to participate in the training program. I want to make sure that no matter what you don’t get hurt, or take things too fast.
- Sign up for a race in your area that would be a good starting point. Some websites that you can use to sign up for races are as follows because the holidays are around the corner, but still far enough away to train for a race I would recommend a Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years race.

- Start a training program. There is a variety of training schedules available out there. Some are better than others, of course, but here are some good places to start.

- Free Couch to 5K
- Set a meeting on the track, streets, or treadmill. Make it an official time slot on your calendar that you don’t miss. I know life sometimes get in the way, time management is the best defense to an ever-changing offense. Something like that, I’m not a sports person, other than running, swimming, and occasionally playing some soccer with my kids.
- Meal plan and prep. You can do this a variety of ways. Plan the meals for the next week, or two weeks (month if you can), build a list of exactly what you are going to be eating for your meals during that time and then shop for ONLY those items. This could be a little difficult the first time, but don’t give up. The next time will be better. A great benefit of doing this, in the long run, will also be saving money on food (versus spending more money eating out).
- Match your training $1 for mile. This last one might be a little different when it comes to recommended ways to go forward. The reason why this little tidbit is added is that I don’t know too many people that can afford to spend $6,000-$8,000 (including airfare) on a weeks vacation for a family of 4 at Walt Disney World without much advanced financial planning. Over the next 2 years during your training for every whole mile, put aside a matching $1. Put it out of sight. Realistically, you will be able to pay for the race itself. But either way, you have 2 years to put aside the money.
