I have a couple of amazing boys that are unimaginably turning out to be little nerdy. They absolutely love Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Batman, and Spiderman and just being very intellectual and learning all there is out there about those topics. There is nothing wrong with that because they have found something that they are passionate about.
With that being said my oldest is 6, and because of his eyes he has a hard time focusing on the written word. My youngest is 4 and doesn’t read. Usually, I read some short, maybe 5-10 minute long, books to them at night but I wanted to try to do something different. So I started reading a chapter book to them. One night during dinner I went to our bookshelf and picked two books, The Jungle Book and The Wizard of Oz for them to pick. The Jungle Book won that night. Since then we have been reading 1-2 chapters a night they decided what books they wanted me to read to them for the rest of the year.
The Jungle Book I and II
The Oz Books (I, II, and III)– I did not even know that there are 14 books in the entire series.
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (I, II, and III)
Harry Potter (I, II, and III)
This is what they decided on, it will certainly take a little time to read all these books, but I’m sure that it will be adjusted after a while. The boys are even trying to get me to jump over the Oz Books and go straight into the LotR, I’m not quite sure about that at this time just because I want to open their horizons to other books. We shall see.
I did not expect the response that I got from them about reading such a length of a book, I thought that they would get bored, or just avoid it. Instead, they keep asking me to read longer and longer each night they were excited to know what would happen to Mowgli next.
What ages did you start reading chapter books to your kids?
See you on the other side.
